The difference between assessment centre and development centre lies in its purpose. Assessment centre is designed principally to aid organisations in making selection, recruitment, promotion decisions while development centre is designed principally to aid organisations in identifying the strengths and development needs of its people.

Both assessment centre and development centre consist of an integrated system of behavioral interviews, cognitive tests, personality measures, and simulation exercises designed to generate behaviour similar to that required for success in a target job or job level.
